Thursday in The Locker Room:

  • Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed joined Crump and JP on the heels of yesterday's official launch of an MLS franchise in town, and the Mayor told the guys this announcement demonstrates that Atlanta means business when it comes to competing on the national and international stage.
  • Mayor Reed also said the combination of a new stadium plus an MLS franchise puts Atlanta in a strong position to bid for a Wold Cup.
  • ESPN Soccer analyst Alexi Lalas also joined us and he told the guys he was impressed by the turnout and reception at yesterday's announcement.
  • And we were lucky enough to catch up with the NFL's All-Time leading rusher, Hall-of-Famer Emmitt Smith, who told Crump and JP that Falcon fans shouldn't be so quick to give up on Steven Jackson after one down season.

  • We continued our Falcons Reload coverage with an in-depth look at the secondary and Crump says it's imperative that the Falcons use one of their early to mid-round picks to upgrade the corner position.
  • We also previewed the NBA playoffs with NBA TV's Sekou Smith, who told Crump and JP that the Hawks hit an absolute home run with the hiring of Steve Koonin as their new CEO.
  • Sekou also said that Hawks point guard Jeff Teague could give the Indiana Pacers all they can handle in their first round series beginning this weekend.

  • Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith joined the show as the team prepares to re-convene on Monday for off-season workouts and he told Crump and JP there is a definite sense of urgency around the facility this week.
  • Coach Smith also told Crump and JP that their chances for a successful season are all predicated on winning the line of scrimmage, a problem that submarined the 2013 campaign.
  • And Smitty also said having the ability to shift defenses according to scheme and game situations is more important than having a set 3/4 or 4/3 alignment.
  • Fox Sports College Football analyst and friend of the show Coy Wire also joined us in-studio after travelling to Clemson to cover their spring game and witnessing the events that led to the dismissal of quarterback Chad Kelly.

  • We wrapped up Georgia's G-Day and Spring practice slate with CSS Georgia analyst, fomer Dawgs quarterback and our very own DJ Shockley, and he told the guys that the new-look defense looked sharp in their Spring debut on Saturday.
  • DJ also said that without Aaron Murray in the fold, running back Todd Gurley has taken on more of a leadership role for the Georgia offense.
  • And speaking of Murray, he joined us this morning as well and told the guys that his rehab has been going great and he can't wait to perform in front of NFL scouts during Georgia's Pro Day on Wednesday.
  • And we wrapped up the 2014 Masters with ESPN Golf analyst Andy North who says that despite Bubba Watson having all the star power and skill in the world, he doubts the two-time Masters winner can carry the sport the way Tiger Woods has in the past.
  • Andy also said that Masters runner-up Jordan Spieth has the make-up to be a force on the tour and don't be surprised if majors victories start rolling in for the young Texan.

  • ESPN Golf Analyst Bob Harig joined us from Augusta after a Day 1 that saw the course get the best out of the best golfers in the world and left more than a few household names in unfamiliar territory. Bob told the guys he was surprised by the Thursday scores.
  • One golfer who didn't seem to mind the conditions was 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson who Bob said could do no wrong with his opening round.
