It’s A Wrap!
Posted 1/5/2009 12:01:00 PM
The holidays are over and here are my takes from the past couple of weeks with our locals.

*It was disappointing for sure Saturday as the Falcon’s season came to an end. However, I am quite anxious to see Thomas Dimitroff do his thing in his second off-season. With both the draft and money under the cap I like our chances for continued improvement.

*I was even more disappointed with what I witnessed New Year’s Eve at the GA Dome. I still have a bad taste in my mouth and am completely shocked that a Paul Johnson coached team could ever look so bad. It was still a nice season but I need to time to get over this one.

*When is the last time UGA really played in a bowl game against one of the real college football powers? Their last six bowl opponents have been, and in order…… ...

Here We Go, But……
Posted 12/29/2008 12:00:00 AM
It’s still hard to imagine that our Falcons are in the playoffs. The Falcons are actually in the playoffs!

What a season it has been.

But I can’t help but think it all comes to an end Saturday afternoon in Arizona.
I just think we have not been playing all that well lately. I take that back. I don’t think Matt Ryan has been playing that well lately.
Whether he has hit the rookie wall or defenses have figured him out a bit, his play has been, well, very rookie like the last month.

The Falcons have won despite this, thanks to turnovers from the opposing team and playing bad teams, like yesterday.

The Cardinals certainly don’t strike fear in me but they are playing at home, did finish with a win yesterday and can throw the ball around with the best of them. Our secondary is average and I ...

Smith or Johnson?
Posted 12/23/2008 10:00:00 AM
As I sit here and reflect on two of the best stories of the year in Atlanta sports…..the Falcons turnaround and the Yellow Jackets return to relevance….I can’t help but think about who would get my coach of the year award locally.

This two man race is tough to call but I’d have to pick Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson in a close call.

I know how far the Falcons have come since the Vick, Mora, Petrino debacles but turnarounds in the NFL are annual. There is always one story similar to the Falcons and even this year the birds are competing with the Dolphins to be the biggest turnaround.

What Paul Johnson has done is a bigger feat.

*The Yellow Jackets are on the verge of ten wins with a win in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl.

*They beat their arch rival in Athens.

*The Jackets were picked to go 3 and ...

I Don’t Care About Moral Victories
Posted 12/18/2008 10:00:00 AM
I should feel better about this Hawks team. But I don’t!

I know we beat the Cavs Saturday night ending their eleven game win streak.
I know they have played the World Champion Celtics to the very finish in both meetings this year losing by one and three points.
I know they started the season 6 & 0.
I know they have already won half as many games on the road as last year.

I know, I know, I know. However, this team still very much feels like a middle of the road team Eastern Conference squad as their record(15-10) and conference standing(5th) suggests.

They are certainly improved…..noticeably the bench and Marvin Williams.
But Josh Smith still comes and goes with his performance and they certainly lack the coach.
I like Mike Woodson as a man. I don’t like Mike Woodson as a coach.
Joe Johnson is an All-Star. Joe ...

Matt Ryan MVP?......Come on!
Posted 12/12/2008 10:00:00 AM
*Matt Ryan is absolutely the rookie of the year in the NFL. However, I have a hard time giving him the MVP. This team’s success has been more than just Matt Ryan. With pieces like John Abraham, Michael Turner, Roddy White, the offensive line and a new regime lead by Coach Mike Smith, I can’t call Matt Ryan the MVP. But I do think we will call him a Super Bowl winner one day in the future.

*The Yellow Jackets will put on a show New Year’s Eve at the Georgia Dome versus LSU, only ramping up expectations for 2009. And they couldn’t have a better coach to handle those expectations than Paul Johnson!

*The Bulldogs will run circles around the slow Big Ten boys from Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl. I feel bad that the Dawgs got such a bad draw but I guess that comes with ...
