It’s there for the taking
Posted 7/28/2010 10:26:00 AM
No, this is really our year -- I mean it this time. I know we talked a big game in the past but this is the year we finally put it all together and people will actually take us seriously.
That is the cry from everyone involved in the ACC this year. Over the last several years, they have been the little brother, not just to the SEC, but to the Big 10, Pac-10, Big 12 and some years even the Big East, trying to compete with college football’s elite, and year after year, they have come up woefully short.
Being the rabid ACC man that I am, I have fallen prey to recent cries of "This is the year," only to be disappointed and mocked by my SEC and Big 10 friends.
Everything is in place this year for a huge year in the conference: as many as six teams in the ...

Great first half ... now what?
Posted 7/14/2010 9:04:00 AM
What a ride it’s been for the Braves through the first 2.5 months of the season. They could not have played any worse for the first month (8-14) and couldn’t have played any better than the last month and a half (44-22, a major league best). There is a tendency to think maybe the real Braves are somewhere in between that, but I don’t think so. 52-36 is who you are -- 89 games are more than enough to tell me that.
With that being said, if the Braves really want to make a serious run at this thing (and I don’t mean just a NL East title), then I think they still need to find another run-producer for this lineup. I don’t think you can send Bobby out a winner with Chipper and Glaus being your No. 3 and No. 5 hitters. Glaus was out of his mind in May and kick-started this ...

What I missed
Posted 7/7/2010 9:13:00 AM
One of the cool things about working in sports is the unpredictability each day brings -- you literally never know what might pop up. So when you go on vacation, you are always at risk of missing something juicy. There is a reason why no Zone hosts are allowed to take vacation between September and February; it's football season and we can’t afford to be away for any length of time. So we usually take the majority of our time off during the "dog days of summer," like I did last week. Well ... something juicy definitely popped up.
When I go on vacation, I usually like to shut it down and not pay too much attention to details of the sporting world. I will always sneak a peek at the internet or catch a few headlines on Sportscenter, but that’s about it.
However, I did make a point of watching ...

Draft Night!
Posted 6/24/2010 9:05:00 AM
The NBA Draft used to be my favorite day of the year -- I don’t think there is anyone who analyzed and dissected this day more than me. I was doing mock drafts when I was 8 years old.
This is my day, until this year.
Don’t get me wrong, I still read everything I can get my hands on and try to talk to as many people in the know as I can, but it’s just not the same anymore. The NBA Draft used to be a spectacle: big names, botched picks, far-fetched rumors, ridiculous suits and the always enjoyable game of, "Is that his Mom or Grandma who just hugged him in the green room?"
The Draft started going downhill when the high-schoolers started coming straight into the league. You became less familiar with the names that were being called, and if you don’t get to see ...

We need a payoff … badly
Posted 6/17/2010 11:05:00 AM
The Lakers and Celtics -- the two most storied franchises in the NBA, and all of sports for that matter. Hall of Fame players on each side, arguably the greatest player on the planet on the court, a coach with double-digit championships, another coach with a ring and a great personality, young players that you love, old players that you hate, plenty of crazy players on both teams and a top-notch announcing team that consistently entertains. This series has had it all … except for a really good game or a defining moment.
Quite frankly, the play has been sub-par and the effort on both sides has been hit-or-miss. That sentence should not be typed during a NBA Finals series. The Celtics didn’t show for Games 1 or 6, the Lakers took off Games 2 and 4, what is that about? If this were the Spurs and Magic squaring off, it would be universally ...
