Braves and Pitcher Julio Teheran Agree to Terms on Six-Year Contract

Contract includes an option for the 2020 season

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Atlanta Braves announced today that they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Julio Teheran on a six-year contract. The contract runs through the 2019 season and includes an option for the 2020 campaign.  Financial terms of the deal were not announced.

“We are excited to sign Julio to a long-term contract,” Braves Executive Vice President and General Manager Frank Wren said. “He is one of the best young pitchers in the National League and one of our core of players we expect to be together for a number of years.”

Teheran, 22, owns a 15-9 career record with a 3.44 ERA in 37 games (34 starts).   He enjoyed a fine season in 2013, when finished fourth in voting for the National League Rookie of the Year Award.  Teheran made 30 starts and posted a 14-8 record with a 3.20 ERA, 170 strikeouts and just 45 walks in 185.2 innings of work.  He led all Major League rookies and ranked seventh among N.L. starting pitchers (minimum 180 IP) with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.78.  He also led all MLB rookies in walks per nine innings pitched (2.18) and ranked second in wins and strikeouts, third in opponents’ batting average (.246) and fourth in ERA.

Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2007, Teheran made his Major League debut during the 2011 season, when he appeared in five games (three starts).
