Mike Bell's Mock Draft

Mike Bell's Mock Draft...(thank God for cut and paste)

Just one week to go til the 2013 NFL Draft at New York's Radio City. What a spectacle this thing has become. The draft is now a made for TV event broadcast on two networks over three days. Thursday night is the first round complete with GM's and coaches Skyping from inside every team's war room. Watching the video of the "old draft" in the early 80's it just looks so amateurish. Pete Rozelle would be handed and index card in a hotel ball room that looked no bigger than your local VFW Hall. Old Dr Z, Sports Illustrated's Paul Zimmerman would be getting almost every pick wrong and if you were lucky ESPN would actually have some tape of the guy getting selected. A few things haven't changed, Mel Kiper's ridiculous hair helmet and Chris Berman stuttering and stammering his way through cliché after cliché and arcane rock n' roll references. Another element of the draft that remains the same are the mutants who paint their face, throw on a jersey and spend hours in the balcony booing almost every pick regardless if affects their team or not.

Who are these people? Mostly they're Eagles and Jets fans. Mouth breathers in personalized jerseys with names like The Dominator hopping on Amtrak or the LIRR at 7 in the morning to ride to NYC to make complete idiots out of themselves on National TV. To watch the entire draft on television is bad enough but how about the dudes who stick around for the 253rd and final pick also known as Mr. Irrelevant?

Will we get some surprises like two years ago when the Falcons jumped up to grab Julio Jones? There are some rumors the Dolphins are looking to make a move to replace Jake Long with a big time left tackle. SI's Peter King says he's hearing Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff may be looking to jump up for a defensive player. But what you will see next Thursday will more likely be some teams looking to drop down in the first round and pick up some extra picks. This is a draft filled with more solid if not spectacular worker bees than bona fide super stars. As former NFL executive Charlie Casserly told us last week, there's more depth on the defensive side in this class...

If the Falcons do move up, you would think it might be only 2 or 3 places to draft a defensive back like Desmond Trufant, or maybe if an Alec Ogletree was there late in the first. The Falcons have so many needs (pass rusher, linebacker, secondary not to mention the tight end of the future and o-line depth) that I have a hard time believing Dimitroff would swing for the fences and mortgage the bulk of the teams' picks to pick up a Dee Milliner for instance. Unless of course you subscribe to the "all in" mentality and you grab a stud shut down corner who is an impact player right in Week 1.

Since every numb skull with a twitter page or a website has their own mock draft I suppose I have to come up my own...

I will use the NFL Network's (and Archer & Bell regulars) Daniel Jeremiah and the a fore mentioned Charlie Casserly's mock drafts as my frame work...which is a nice way of saying I'm cutting and pasting their picks...and throwing in a few of my opinions too. Like one way or another Eddie Lacy replaces Steven Jackson in St. Louis...I've got Dawgs Alec Ogletree to the Bears and Jarvis Jones to the Vikes. I hate to give the Saints a stud, but I see Barkevious Mingo moving from Death Valley to the Superdome...and just for all the fun we could have doing Estonian impressions on the air. ..I have the Falcons selecting SMU's World Strongest Man contestant Margus Hunt in the 2nd round....and I also having us picking up Dee Milliner thus solving most of our defensive issues, while simultaneously losing all our picks for the rest of this year and most of 2014.
