‘Now, I Can See It'
Umenyiora brings Super Bowl toughness to Atlanta
Last night at 9:06, just as the first half of the Miami at Chicago basketball game,
was nearing its conclusion, our Falcons announced that Osi Umenyiora is now
a ‘Dirty Bird’…My first thought…? Well, my first thoughts ran parallel with what I
was watching on TV…
Here came the vaunted Miami Heat on a breakaway run toward obliterating
the seemingly unbreakable record of 33 consecutive victories set by the Lakers
of West, Chamberlain, Goodrich and the Miami architect, Pat Riley…Chicago,
with their backs against the wall, without Derrick Rose and Joaquim Noah, had
nothing to fall back on but pride, physical and mental toughness, intensity and a
team wide, steel-like determination not to be denied…They did it…! AND, at that
moment I thought if Osi doesn’t give us a tackle or a sack, that will be OK, as long
as he gives us a dose of those intangibles the Bulls just put on display…
Here’s a man, in Umenyiora, who has twice previously been down the Super Bowl
path, AND WON…Here’s a man who, until San Francisco and Seattle out toughed
the galvanized Giants in the physicality category, the Giants, prior to that, had
been the most intense, physical team in the league AND, Osi was one of those
sledgehammers who helped the Giants lay the wood to opponents. We need
some of that slobberknocker stuff…That’s what I was thinkin’…!
This is what Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff was eager to find out. Did Osi
Umenyiora have the desire to lead and demonstrate to our guys what it means,
to ‘BRING IT’ on every single snap.
Yesterday it was vague…Today the engraving on the Lombardi….. is more legible..!
