I am a Marine, my two brothers are Air Force and Marine Corps’ Veterans of the Korean War. My uncles were World War II Master Sergeants and Majors and a physician who served in the Army Medical Corps. My nephew Bobby, a sergeant, is not long home from Afghanistan. His brother, Billy, plays in the Washington Nationals organization. My older brother, Brian, went off to play football at Annapolis, but returned home to his love, Jeannette, and captained the Iona baseball team… My Uncle Walter, the Major, graduated from Brown and went directly from campus to the Polo Grounds. He pitched for the Giants and St. Louis Browns…What I’m trying to say is, I’m a ‘guy’…But a guy with a confession…Y’see, I prefer cheerleaders…!
Brian, fathered four beautiful girls and Buzzy, our middle brother, is Dad to two vivacious beauties..
My two daughters, Page and Grace, are the love of my life. Oh, they competed….. They played, they cried, they tried…Their games were soccer and basketball and, of course, I was recruited to coach all their teams, and I loved it. I surprised myself by never gazing at the far-away field and wistfully wishing I was establishing athletic fundamentals for those, little boy, hell-bent for leather, mini-monsters playing over there..! No, I bided my time, content in the knowledge, that when my little girls became cheerleaders, they would know what they’re cheering about…!
Two years ago, Page, my first born, made me a grandpa, when she delivered a Teentsy-weentsy beauty named Scarlett…At 3:14 this morning she blessed me with my second granddaughter, Juliet..
I’m running to the hospital now with Juliet’s first gift…A ‘PINK’ football, of course.!
