Could this finally be our Fall

I have always been kind of a glass half full kind of guy when thinking about the teams I root for but dare I say that this Fall may give me more reason for that than any Fall previously. Here then is my look at why the local teams may be giving us a three month stretch like few in recent memory:

Atlanta Braves: How can you not be excited about a team with the biggest division lead in all of baseball? The Braves have the things that matter most, deep pitching and players having career years. Few teams can match Hudson, Jurrjens, Hanson, Lowe and Medlin when it comes to starting depth and how about a deep bullpen highlighted by three lefties including a Billy Wagner that has never been better. Toss in the rookie of the year, (Heyward) the leading hitter in the game, (Prado) and maybe the single biggest signing of the off-season in Troy Glaus. That combined with whatever bat Frank Wren is about to bring in and suddenly we are having dreams of October baseball in New York. Throw in the karma of Bobby’s last go round and we may be setting up for a Braves finish like none other.

Atlanta Falcons: The arrow continues to point upward for what is now one of the best run organizations in the entire NFL. Can you have a better core of folks in charge than Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith and oh yeah, Matt Ryan. The team continues to build the smart way, through the draft, unless there is a free agent must have out there like Dunta Robinson to bolster the secondary. The Falcons will be better on both sides of the ball no question this year and with Sean Witherspoon, Peria Jerry and William Moore all bringing young swagger to a defense, the Falcons can really stare down the Saints and feel like they are right there. Not to mention a healthy Michael Turner and Harry Douglas on the other side of the ball, all looks good for post season football.

Georgia- Mark Richt is excited for good reason. A veteran offensive line, big time skilled position players and a defense that will be eons better than a year ago (god bless Todd Grantham) all points to Georgia contending for the SEC title game. Did we not mention the greatest special teams combo in Georgia football history with punter Drew Butler and kicker Blair Walsh. I know I know, what about a quarterback that has never taken a snap, all is well, Aaron Murray has the karma of the 2010 Atlanta Fall on his side, and two pretty good tailbacks in King and Ealey to boot.

Georgia Tech: While the Jackets may look like the team headed in the wrong direction, let’s not forget that these ACC champs have two huge factors returning to the Flats, their coach and their quarterback. Paul Johnson has won with a lot less and with studs like Anthony Allen and Roddy Jones running the ball and a flat out play-maker in quarterback Josh Nesbitt, do you really want to pick someone else to win their division? Al Groh brings his 3-4 defense to Atlanta along with playmakers like Brad Jefferson and Mario Butler he can count on, not to mention the return of Cooper Taylor at safety, it all means a serious shot at another ACC title game.

Liberty Media/AGS - separated at birth. I am so mad I could spit nails!! Weak corners, shortstop, and outfield except right. Interesting comments by a sportswriter in TX: "Everybody and their brother knew Mark T. was going to sign with Yankees when the time came...EXCEPT THE BRAVES!! He said the Rangers nows have 2 all-stars from the deal and Braves have NADA!! How could a GM or owner allow his team to rely on old legs and old bats?" Answer: ownership. This company has plenty of $$,,,they CHOOSE to limit. I have been angry since the late 90's. Every trading deadline would pass and nothing. Needed a bat, but no go. Drive to win? Don't think so.
