20 things to be talking about at the 4th of July Barbecue
Posted 7/2/2010 3:00:00 PM
1. Given the choice to play for the Mad Russian and Jay-Z in Brooklyn or play your home games in the mecca that is Madison Square Garden, which option would you choose? The Knicks vs. Nets discussion, all of a sudden, is a real one.

2. If Chipper Jones continues to contribute on a regular basis, do you really think he will hang up the cleats this season?

3. How can "Friday Night Lights" get 3 million viewers and "Wipe Out" get 17 million? Trust me, there has never been a finer acted show in TV history than that -- and no, I am not talking about "Wipe Out."

4. Why are the sandwiches and now the burger at Muss and Turner’s in Vinings so much better than anywhere else in town? Good news by the way: that same team just took over the recently closed Joel space over at I-75 and West Paces Ferry. Very similar neighborhood vibe -- a place to follow.

5. How in the hell did the Boston Celtics let Ron Artest be the hero of the NBA Finals? I have promised myself that I will never ever sit in front of any channel long enough to let me watch that play again. As soon as they show Kobe passing it off to him I will be watching the Lifetime channel.

6. Why don’t guys like Damon Evans or any other high-profile type simply pay the money for a driver?

7. Do we really need to read full-page stories on the back-up catcher for the Braves, David Ross?

8. Can you really say you would take Roy Halladay in a big game over Tim Hudson?

9. Has "Mad Men" now officially been off the air for like twenty-three months?

10. If Hawks training camp opened and Marvin Williams was nowhere to be found, would one person in Atlanta even bother to make a call or write and e-mail to find out why?

11. How can the guys at Pixar be that much smarter than everyone else in the the movie business? Oh yeah, and is it truly okay to admit you cried during the final scenes of "Toy Story 3?"

12. With all the money that "Sex in the City" has made by getting in the film business, can David Chase and the cast of "The Sopranos" really resist making that Sopranos movie in the next few years?

13. How do people really go a month without eating pizza, pasta or sandwiches? What legitmate joy is in those "no carbers" lives?

14. If Chris Paul ended up in Orlando, can you really say that they would not roll to an NBA title?

15. Has there ever been a worse decision-maker than Michael Vick? You really need to invite strangers to your birthday party at some Mexican joint in Virginia Beach, and charge them fifty bucks to be a VIP? Who did you think would show up to that, the local church group up the street?

16. What person on the planet could listen to the Zac Brown Band song “Toes” and not say that they feel a whole lot better?

17. Is there any reason in the world to not be really happy for how things worked out for Jeff Francoeur? I know I know -- it’s still the Mets.

18. What kind of sick, evil soul says and thinks the kind of things that Mel Gibson comes up with (Check out Radaronline if you are wondering of what I speak)?

19. Is there any question that the Tony LaRussa thing has run its course in St. Louis?

20. Are the current version of the Atlanta Hawks the worst passing team in NBA history?

BONUS: Is there anything better than a perfectly cooked kielbasa with a great bun and juicy sautéed onions? Time for me to go make that happen ...

Agreed on Friday Night Lights. I absolutley love they show and cant figure out why it is not more popular other than it must just be promoted wrong or there are not enough 35-45 year old fathers out there like me that this show hits home with so much. Your quote sounds almost word for word what I used to say to my wife "It shows how stupid our country is when we are on Big Brother 10 or the bachelor 7 and this show struggles to stay on the air"

Hello, my name is Anita. And I am not sure Mr.Shapiro will get this email. However,I would just like to say, I appreciated his comments this morning concerning Damon Evans. He seemed genuine in his thoughts, which were not judgemental.I am not a sports fan,but this case, I think a lot of people had to stop and ask themselves, "what was he thinking". Indeed Mr.Shapiro, people in high-profile positions, have done worse. Although,I truly believe he had to lose his, job, my heart goes out to him and his family. In closing, right now somewhere in the city of Atlanta a man or a woman is driving drunk, with someone else's spouse. Let this be a wake up call to everyone who thinks, it can not happen to them. Thanks for your time.
